06.04.09: Chris Carpenter faces the minimum through seven, allowing three hits in his complete-game win

Carpenter used 67 pitches (41 strikes) to get through five innings against the Cubs. He struck out four, walked two and allowed three hits. Carpenter had good velocity with his fastball (94 mph) and better bite with his curveball (a wicked 72-mph backdoor curveball froze Derrek Lee). But he didn’t have consistent command — as would be expected from a pitcher who hasn’t throw a pitch in competition in almost five weeks.

After being shelved for five weeks, Cards ace Chris Carpenter is set to thrill fans once more when he returns to the hill to face the rival Cubs on Wednesday.

"I'm always excited about going out and competing," Carpenter said. "That's what this game is all about and I enjoy doing it."
The ball is in his hands tonight. First pitch is at 7:15.

It'll be the second start of the season for the 34-year-old right-hander. He works against the Chicago Cubs, the two-time Central Division champions, in the middle contest of a three-game series.

Comeback trail is nothing new to Carpenter

CHICAGO -- The St. Louis Cardinals have one of the most magnificent "ifs" of the 2009 season: "If Chris Carpenter is healthy ..."

This is truly a league-leading "if" because, when healthy, Carpenter is so indisputably terrific. After getting just four starts out of Carpenter over the last two seasons due to elbow and shoulder injuries, the Cardinals got a vivid reminder of how good baseball life had been with their ace available. On April 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Carpenter was as brilliant as he had been in his 2005 Cy Young season, pitching seven innings of one-hit ball, giving up one unearned run, walking two, striking out seven.

But then, three more shutout innings into his next start, Carpenter departed with what turned out to be a tear of the left oblique muscle. He is now once again on the disabled list. For how long?
